Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is a serious health condition that signifies a collection of risk factors—high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, excess abdominal fat, and abnormal cholesterol levels—that together increase the likelihood of developing heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. It reflects a growing concern in modern health, as it is closely tied to the rise in obesity and sedentary lifestyles.
Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed based on the presence of at least three of the following five criteria:
Abdominal Obesity: Waist circumference of ≥102 cm (40 inches) in men or ≥88 cm (35 inches) in women.
Elevated Triglycerides: Triglyceride levels of ≥150 mg/dL or receiving treatment for elevated triglycerides.
Reduced HDL Cholesterol: HDL cholesterol levels of <40 mg/dL in men or <50 mg/dL in women, or receiving treatment for low HDL cholesterol.
Elevated Blood Pressure: Blood pressure of ≥130/85 mm Hg or receiving treatment for hypertension.
Elevated Fasting Blood Glucose: Fasting glucose level of ≥100 mg/dL or receiving treatment for elevated glucose.
You can assess whether you have metabolic syndrome and its severeity using the following calculator:
Often associated with insulin resistance, where the body struggles to effectively process sugar, metabolic syndrome acts as a warning sign. It suggests that without intervention—through lifestyle changes like improved diet, increased physical activity, and weight management—an individual is at heightened risk for more severe cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. Addressing metabolic syndrome isn't just about managing current symptoms—it's about preventing a future health crisis, maintaining quality of life, and reducing the burden and cost of chronic diseases.
Dr. Hasan specializes in helping patients manage and overcome metabolic syndrome. His approach is personalized and holistic, focusing not just on treating the individual risk factors—such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and abnormal cholesterol levels—but also on addressing the root causes, like insulin resistance and obesity.
Through a combination of lifestyle coaching, dietary guidance, advanced technology, and, when necessary, medication, Dr. Hasan works closely with patients to reduce their risk factors for metabolic syndrome and improve their overall health.
